Just redo it? An assessment of study attributes and open science practices affecting the potential reproducibility and replicability of research in Computational Communication Science

This study examines factors that affect the potential reproducibility and replicability of research in Computational Communication Science (CCS). Through a systematic literature review and content analysis of 476 CCS publications, we assessed open science practices that influence reproducibility and study attributes that can influence the reproducibility as well as the replicability of research in this field. Our findings reveal low rates of data and code sharing that reduce the reproducibility of CCS research. In addition, we find a high prevalence of media content and self-report data and a widespread use of APIs and database downloads for data collection in CCS studies, which can negatively impact both reproducibility and replicability. We discuss the implications of these findings and propose ways in which they might be addressed.
